CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

NOVEMBER 1991

Sharon crouches as she hurriedly stuffs a bunch of beautiful pink roses into a pot containing water, pricking her finger on one of the sharp thorns due to rushing. She wants to finish up and leave work before anyone else enters the flower store. Her boss has taken the day off yet again, and it’s almost time to close. She hates it here and curses the day she ever agreed to the job, wrongly assuming it would be better than working at the bar. Working with a female boss and mainly female customers, it should have been perfect. But the boss is mean to her, regularly making her cry, and she’s been getting some unwanted attention lately. She hasn’t told Pam about that as she doesn’t want her to worry. Their relationship is the only thing that keeps her going most days. But that could all be in jeopardy once she gets home later, because she needs to tell Pam about something awful that happened.

Her stomach lurches with dread at the thought of breaking the news. Their lives are about to drastically change, and she has no idea how her girlfriend will feel about it.

The bell above the door jangles, making Sharon jump. She spills the pot of roses all over the floor. The water drenches her sneakers. “Shoot!” She looks at who has entered and breathes a sigh of relief when she sees her girlfriend standing there with a bemused look.

“Did I scare you?”

Her hand goes to her fluttering heart as she stands. “No. Yes. I don’t know. I was hoping it wasn’t another customer.” She attempts a smile. “Give me a minute to close up. I’ll meet you at the car.”
